House of Rep to Ban Surfing in PR

Since the 1968 World Amateur Surfing Championships were held in Rincon, Puerto Rico, the island has been bookmarked as a world class surfing destination by international surfers. These over 40 ft monsters from Fajardo, to Isabela, to Rincon mark Puerto Rico’s well endowed oceanography.

Johnny Mendez, President of the House of Representatives is pushing for a new law to ban surfing on Puerto Rico. If the NOAA issues warnings on ocean conditions as too dangerous, anyone surfing will be fined.

If passed, this law will drastically affect the tourism economy of several towns in Puerto Rico, where Surfing generates millions of dollars a year.
